Pixie Dust Plant-Based Food Color Review
I’m always on the lookout for new natural food color options, and I finally got my hands on Pixie Dust! Here’s my honest review after testing it in icing.
[Product Overview]
• Pixie Dust Plant-Based Food Color
• Powdered Food Color
• Tested in Royal Icing (franken frosting)
[Performance & Results]
• Color payoff: Some colors are very vibrant; others are pastel but could be brighter/more vibrant if using more.
• Mixing: Hydrated with distilled water to make smooth paste, no graininess.
• Taste: No noticeable aftertaste. Blue had a pungent smell however I believe it was a batch issue and didn’t affect the taste.
• Bleeding & fading: Yellow, apple green and orange seem to have faded slightly.
• Comparison: Overall I feel like it compares well to other powdered options available, slightly better price point but slightly less vibrant.
SURPRISED that the color did not develop overnight – unlike other natural powders, I feel like the overnight change in the shade/vibrancy was little to none.
[Pros & Cons]
✅Hydrates easy.
✅Mixes easy (not grainy).
✅Slightly better pricing with regards to volume.
✅Fuchsia, blue and red are vibrant (blue and red use double the amount of powder)
❌Jars are over-full and powder messes
❌Yellow, orange, both green’s, pink and purple could be brighter
❌Some colors faded slightly (and didn’t get more vibrant overnight)
[Final Thoughts + Who Would Benefit Most?]
• Overall recommendation: I would use these again, they’re a great option if you want to especially get something fast through amazon at a fair price. Available in 44g and 22g.
• Best use case: Good option for beginners to professionals, slight learning curve for knowing how much to mix - or even how to mix. I generally always double blue and red when using powdered colors, that was true for pixie dust colors. However, I also doubled purple in this case and it was still very light.
Pixie Dust colors are available here. If you use them in your baking and decorating projects, I would love to get your feedback!
